Our Next Concert

Haydn’s Mass in Time of War is the work featured in our next concert at West Vancouver United Church on Sunday, November 12, 2017 at 2:00 p.m..

Haydn composed the Missa in tempore belli (sometimes known as Paukenmesse or the Kettledrum Mass) in 1796. France had been at war with Austria almost continuously since the French Revolution started in 1789 and in 1796 Austria was mobilizing its troops again after an ineffectual peace accord.

The Mass reflects a military aspect through its use of timpani and the sounds of trumpets. It begins quietly with muffled timpani, becoming more intense as the mood of the movement changes. The middle sections are wonderful examples of Haydn’s exuberant energy, and the Mass has an upbeat ending possibly reflecting Haydn’s faith (mistaken!) in the Austrian army.
